The Classical Cookbook
Published in Paperback by British Museum Press (April, 2000)
Authors: Andrew Dalby and Sally Grainger
Average review score:

Lovely combination of recipes and historical information
Excellent book for both its recipes (easy to follow with directions given for both the English and American cook) and its description of Roman life, for both the Roman commoners and the citizens of stature. If you want to have a Roman banquet, or a simple, traditional Roman meal, this is an ideal book. I especially enjoyed the well-written sections on Roman history, which perfectly integrate the recipes with what we know about the people's lives and the ingredients which were available to them. I looked at every Roman cookbook I could find, in both the USA and England, and my three favorites are: Classical Cookbook, by Dalby and Grainger, and, A Taste of Ancient Rome, by Ilaria Giacosa, and Roman Cookery, by Mark Grant. The latter two have more recipes than the first, but Classical Cookbook is a quality book with exquisite pictures, illustrations and explanations.

What a great map of London!
We used this map on a recent trip to London and found we didn't use anything else. It showed us a nice hotel near Waterloo(where we were taking the train to Paris later)and then an even better one wtih huge pool near the Tate Museum. Taking a day flight from Boston (THE WAY TO GO), we arrived in London at 9 PM and the map showed us two wonderful restaurants near the hotel for dinner at 10. The next day the map showed us interesting sights from Britain's underground H.Q. during the blitz to Spencer House, a restored 18th century mansion belonging to Princess Diana's family. We had similar luck with their Paris map.

Coins (Interpreting the Past Series, No 3)
Published in Paperback by University of California Press (September, 1991)
Author: Andrew Burnett
Average review score:

Beyond Coin Collecting
In this book Andrew Burnett writes that there is the wealth of information that coins can contribute to our understanding of the past. For example, the coins minted by Richard the Lionhearted and his brother John all carried the name of their father Henry II because public confidence was based upon an unchanging design. Or for another example, the coins minted by Caesar Augustus phased out the use of divine symbols when depicting the emperor. The political message sent by the coins was that Augustus was "first among equals." Not surprisingly, Nero reinstated the use of divine symbols on his coins. The political message here is that Nero was "first without equals." As historical sources coins have a couple of advantages. One is that they were officially produced. And the second is that they were massed produced.

_Coins_ is a concise yet very interesting book for readers who want to get beyond coin collecting.

The College Racket
Published in Hardcover by Simon Publications (July, 2001)
Authors: Andrew L. Simon and Charlton Heston
Average review score:

HIGHER EDUCATION NEEDS AN UPDATE
Although this book was written primarily for students and their parents, taxpayers in general should also gain from reading and absorbing the real message presented by Simon. His message is simply this: A college education should not only provide the student with programs and courses that truly give the student the necessary knowledge and training to become a self-sustaining and useful citizen but also that the taxpayers' dollars are spent as efficiently as possible.

Simon covers many of the positive aspects of programs at various colleges but he deals mainly with the deficiences and inefficiences of the large number of offerings across the country. He goes into great detail with documented information on those two issues and views poor preparation at the high school level as just part of the problem.

Anyone who is genuinely interested in the subject of improving the educational system in this country can surely benefit from the well over 200 pages of fact-filled information and views put forth by the author. Not everyone will agree with him but his book does bring into focus that some serious changes must be made if we are to continue to be a world leader in higher education
